Punic War, Third (149 - 146 b.c.) - English

Even though Carthage had lost the Second Punic War, it proceeded to rebuild itself over the next 50 years. In 149 bc the Romans, regretting that had not totally destroyed Carthage, decided to attack and finish off Carthage for good.

n between the First and Second Punic Wars, the Carthaginians, under Hannibal were building an empire in Spain (also know as New Carthage). Eventually this buildup came into direct conflict with the Roman Empire. The Second Punic War started when Hannibal besieged the city of Saguntum -- Rome had promised to protect the city from attack. The Romans demanded that Hannibal call off the siege and when he refused the Romans declared war. Hannibal invaded central and southern Italy (marching via Spain and the Alps) and won decisive victories at Lake Trasimene and Cannae.

First of three wars between Rome and Carthage. The First Punic War (264 to 241 b.c.) was a struggle for control of Sicily and of the sea lanes in the Western Mediterranean. It was triggered by a revolt in the city of Messina. Ultimately it ended with a Roman victory.
