Свыше 60% видов современных змей относится к семейству ужей. Отличительными особенностями их являются полное отсутствие рудиментов таза и задних ног, наличие лишь одного правого легкого, длинная, горизонтально лежащая верхнечелюстная кость, отсутствие подвижных трубчатых зубов и некоторые другие признаки.
