The family includes about 4 species (Eschmeyer et al. 1983; Nelson 1994), although Nelson (1994) pointed out that A. vulpes may actually represent several species. Bonefishes are primarily marine, but may occur in brackish or freshwater and are found in tropical seas worldwide (Nelson 1994).
