This species seemed to be the most common variety seen at the "eel grass" dive spot we frequented. Its flesh appears to bear a greater resemblance to the typical moray eel-- smooth, tough, and slippery.

Distribution: tropical to warm temperate waters. Coastal, some species entering rivers. Posterior nostril usually lying within or piercing the upper lip, opening into mouth. Tongue attached. Branchiostegal rays 15-49 pairs, overlapping midventrally to form a 'jugostegalia', a basketlike structure.

Habitat et biologie: Benthique, sur fonds sableux, vaseux et de graviers du plateau continental et sur herbiers jusqu'à 190 m de profondeur. Vit enfoui dans le sable avec la tête seule qui dépasse. Reproduction en saison chaude (août-septembre sur les côtes d'Algérie); forme larvaire encore inconnue. Se nourrit de poissons et d'invertébrés benthiques.
