The ostariophysan family Cobitidae, whose members are known as loaches, is represented by about 18 genera and about 110 species (Nelson 1994). This family was formerly called Cobitididae. Certain genera formerly placed in the Cobitidae (the most prominent being the genus Nemacheilus) are now considered to belong to the Balitoridae.

Loaches are mainly bottom dwelling fish, with elongated bodies which are sometimes laterally compressed. Many lack scales completely, and have a mucous coat; this makes them more susceptible to parasites and bacteria.
