The family Catostomidae, whose members are known as suckers, contains 13 genera with 68 (Nelson 1994) to 70 (Gilbert 1998) species. Most species (63 or more) are distributed in North America north of Mexico, although two are found in Northeast Asia and China. Suckers are small to large fishes with elongate to deep-bodied shapes, depending on species.

There are at least eleven species of catostomids inhabiting California fresh waters; the majority are native (Moyle 1976). In the study area of the Sacramento-San Joaquin river system, only the Sacramento sucker, Catostomus occidentalis, was collected.
