Nonindigenous Fishes - Anostomidae
- English
URL: http://nas.er.usgs.gov/fishes/accounts/anostomi/anostomi.html
This neotropical characiform family comprises some 12 genera, many of which are monotypic, and about 110 nominal species (Nelson 1994). Anostomids are
fusiform, somewhat elongate fishes and have conical heads with small, nonprotractile mouths. Most species are medium- to large-sized omnivores or vegetarians that
use their incisorlike teeth to clip aquatic vegetation, or as forceps to remove prey from crevices (Taphorn 1992). The family is restricted to freshwater. [ eng ] |

Anostomidae

[ fra ] |
