Distribution: North America from southern Canada to Guatemala. Head with eight barbels: 2 nasal, 2 maxillary and 4 chin. Scaleless. A spine on anterior edge of dorsal (except in Pritella) and pectoral fins.

Эти сомы обитают в разнообразных водоемах Северной Америки. Американский сомик-кошка, или амиур (Amiurus nebulosus),- "переплыл" с помощью человека в 1885 г. океан и размножился сначала в аквариумах любителей, а затем в водоемах Западной Европы. В Америке он населяет водоемы от области Великих озер на севере до Флориды на юге (в Америке его называют почему-то рогатым сомом).
