A revision of the Southeast Asian catfish genus Silurichthys - English

n a recent issue of the Journal of Fish Biology, Ng Heok Hee and Peter Ng completed a revision of the genus Silurichthys of the family Siluridae. Among the authors' findings were the fact that all members of the genus appear to exhibit sexual dimorphism. Mature males have thickened pectoral spines with three to eight distinct posterior serrae. To the naked eye these serrae look like small teeth on the pectoral spine. The authors' also note that they have found this type of sexual dimorpism in the silurid genera Ompok, Pterocryptis, and Hemisilurus.

There are about a dozen members of this family which includes Silurus asotus from Japan, Silurus berdmorei from India, Silurus gilberti From China, etc. but in Europe the main two groups are Wels; Silurus glanis, and Aristotles Catfish; Silurus aristotels. The latter is very similar to the Wels, but only possesses two barbules under the lower jaw, where the Wels, has four.

Welse haben einen schuppenlosen, schleimigen Körper und einen abgeflachten, meist großen Kopf mit Bartfäden. Die Arten sind von Mitteleuropa bis Mittelasien verbreitet. Als ausgeprägte Bodenfische leben sie räuberisch in Seen und Flüssen mit weichem Untergrund.

Den europeiska malen är en av de största sötvattensfiskarna i världen. Här i landet finns den på listan över akut hotade arter. Idag förekommer livskraftiga bestånd endast i tre lokaler; sjön Båven (Södermanland), Möckeln i Helgeåns vattensystem och nedre delen av Emån. Samtliga bestånd är små. I mitten av 1980-talet uppskattades Emåbeståndet till ca 450 individer större än 0,5 kg.
