This neotropical catfish family comprises about 35 genera and about 90 species (Nelson 1994). The family is restricted to South America, ranging from the La Plata-Parana basin north to Colombia (Berra 1981; Burgess 1989; Higuchi 1992). Doradids have a single row or series of plates along their flanks, each with a strong spine, hook, or similar ornamentation.

Thorny catfishes are found in South America (primarily Brazil, Peru and the Guianas). A row of lateral bony plates along body (except in Liosomadoras morrowi). Dorsal fin with spine and 4-6 soft rays.

The doradidae, or talking catfish, are characterized by possession of a series of plates along their sides. The dorsal fin normally comprises a strong spine and 6 rays. An adipose fin is present. Many species are able to make sounds ranging from grunts to clicks. There are about 36 genera within this family, which is in a constant state of revision.
