While most of the driftwood catfishes generally show modest colours, there are, especially in genus Tatia and Centromochlus, some very nice coloured species. During the spring of 1999, Bitter Exotics (Geeste, Germany) succeeded in importing one of the prettiest members of these genera from Peru; Centromochlus perugiae.

This neotropical catfish family comprises 21 genera and about 60 species (Nelson 1994). Auchenipterids range from the Parana-La Plata basin in Argentina north to Panama (Berra 1981). They are small- to medium-sized fishes without armor or plates.

Driftwood catfishes are known to occur in rivers from Panama to Argentina. Naked body. Three pairs of barbels in all but one species, the maxillary pair being the longest. Pectoral and dorsal fins with a strong spine.
