Nonindigenous Fishes - Esocidae - English

The family Esocidae includes one genus and five species (Nelson 1994). They are distributed holarctically in northern and eastern North America, Europe, and northern Asia (Berra 1981). A single genus, Esox, and four species are native to the United States (Page and Burr 1991). Esocids are large fish, cylindrical in shape, have a duckbill-like snout, and (with the exception of E. americanus) are large fish.

Обыкновенная щука (Esox lucius) распространена циркумполярно, в северных водах Европы, Азии и Америки. Это один из самых обширных ареалов среди пресноводных рыб. Амурская щука (Е. reicherti) живет только в бассейне Амура и на Сахалине. Три вида щук - маскинонг (Е. masquinongy), полосатая (Е. niger) и красноперая (Е. americanus) - распространены только в восточной части Северной Америки.
