Distribution: Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. Elongate body; never extremely compressed. With or without adipose fins. Anal fin rays 16-68. Branchiostegal rays 12-16; 4-6 on epihyal (= posterior ceratohyal). Branchiostegal photophores 8-16. Photophores present on isthmus.

Представители семейства гоностомовых наряду с меланостомиевыми рыбами-топориками и светящимися анчоусами - наиболее обычные, широко распространенные и массовые рыбы средних слоев толщи воды Мирового океана. Некоторые виды живут на глубине более 2000 м, но большинство держится в слоях воды от 130-200 до 1000- 1500 м.
