Семейство жемчужноглазых рыб сравнительно невелико и содержит четыре рода примерно с 20 видами. Активные хищники и питаются, судя по содержимому их желудков, главным образом рыбой (светящимися анчоусами, сем. Myctophidae) и в меньшей мере креветками.
