Брегмацеровые отличаются от других трескообразных некоторыми особенностями в строении мозга (в частности, наличием очень широкого канала, заключающего обонятельные нервы), а также положением первого спинного плавника, состоящего из единственного удлиненного луча на затылочной части головы. К этому семейству относится семь видов, объединяемых в единственном роде брегмацеры (Bregmaceros).
