Distribution: most oceans but not in the Arctic and Mediterranean. Bathypelagic. Dorsal fin with 1-3 weak spines. Pelvic fin insertion thoracic or subthoracic; with 1 spine, 6-8 soft rays. Caudal fin 3-4 procurrent spines.
