Distribution: Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific. Dorsal and anal fin rays bear small spines or bucklers at the base. Abdomen with 8 or 9 spinous plates. A large round black spot encircled by a yellow ring, centrally located on the body in some species. Dorsal fins 2; D1 7-10 spines, D2 22-37 soft rays.
