Distribution: Antarctic, Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific (reported primarily off South Africa and southern Australia). Very deep-bodied and compressed. Mouth superior; protractile. Small cycloid or ctenoid scales. Body of young bear conical scutes in some parts. A single spine on pelvic fin; soft rays 5-7.
