The Dactyloptena orientalis grows up to 16 inches. The Flying Gunard prefers a tank of at least 60 gallons with plenty of places to hide & swim. The Dactyloptena orientalis is a carnivore and likes to eat live foods, including live grass, mysid, brine shrimp, crustaceans, clams.

Dans la littйrature, on le cite souvent comme йtant capable de sauter hors de l'eau et de planer sur de courtes distances, d'oщ le nom commun, mais ces rapports sont probablement erronйs et les pectorales йtalйes joueraient un rфle de dйfense et d'alarme contre les prйdateurs.
