The tidepool sculpin has been reported from various Pacific Ocean locations from White Point and Portugese Bend, in southern California, to the Sea of Okhotsk, USSR. In the study area, tidepool sculpin have been reported in Richardson Bay, Tomales Bay, and Bodega Bay. In this study, tidepool sculpin were taken in Richardson and Tomales bays.

Cottidae is a largely marine family, comprising about 70 genera and about 300 species (Nelson 1994). With most species found along the northern Pacific coastline of North America, the family is distributed primarily within the Northern Hemisphere; however, sculpins also occur near the coasts of Australia, New Guinea, and New Zealand.
