Lumpfishes and Snailfishes (Cyclopteridae) - English

Members of this family, which includes 26 species of lumpfishes and 195 species of snailfishes, can be found in the Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, and Antarctic Oceans. Snailfishes and lumpfishes can be easily distinguished from each other. Snailfishes have long, tapering, tadpole-like bodies, while lumpfishes have short, stout bodies. Lumpfish have wart-like tubercles, whereas snailfish have small prickles, no scales, and loose skin.

Distribution: Antarctic, Arctic, Atlantic, and Pacific. Pelvic present or absent; when present, modified into a sucking disc, thoracic. Usually no lateral line. Gill opening usually small. Nelson (1994) recognizes Liparidae as a separate family.

Семейство включает девять родов и около 30 видов. В пределах России известно семь родов и 17 видов. Большая часть обитает в морях северной части Тихого океана; значительно меньше видов известно из северной части Атлантического океана и морей Северного Ледовитого океана. В пределах России встречаются в Японском, Охотском, Беринговом, Карском, Белом, Баренцевом и Балтийском морях.
