Своим удлиненным телом и длинным рылом носарь легко отличается от обыкновенного ерша. Носарь, иначе бирючок, имеет весьма ограниченное распространение он встречается только в реках Черноморского бассейна и почти вполне оправдывает свое латинское название. Там, однако, где встречается бирючок, он в большинстве случаев, особенно в бассейне Днепра (вероятно, и Днестра), многочисленнее обыкновенного ерша, который предпочитает здесь озера и проточные пруды, вероятно потому, что не любит сильного течения, и большие реки Черноморского бассейна для него слишком быстры.
