Distribution: Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific. Depth range 10-500 m (usually 50-200 m). One species (Malacanthus latovittatus) may be found in both marine and brackish water (Goldie River, New Guinea).

Представители этого семейства имеют удлиненное, сигарообразное тело, покрытое мелкой ктеноидной чешуей. Жаберная крышка у них вооружена острым шипом. Малаканты(род Malacanthus, три вида) распространены у атлантических берегов Америки, от Южной Каролины до Уругвая (M. plumieri) и в Красном море, а также Индийском и Тихом океанах. Гоплолатилы (род Hoplolatilus, пять видов) обитают в Индийском океане.
