В семействе луфаревых только один род с единственным видом луфарь (Pomatomus saltatrix). Луфари достигают длины немногим более метра (чаще 30-70 см) и массы до 15 кг (в среднем 1,5-2,0 кг). Обитает луфарь в субтропических водах Атлантического, Индийского и южной части Тихого океана.
