Белокровии представляют собой уникальное явление в мировой ихтиофауне, так как у этих рыб в живом состоянии кровь не красная, как у всех позвоночных, а бесцветная из-за почти полного отсутствия в ней эритроцитов и гемоглобина. Большинство видов живет у берегов Антарктиды, но три вида известно у островов Южная Георгия и Кергелен, и только один вид выходит за пределы Антарктики и обитает у берегов Патагонии.
