Puffers, Members of the Marine Fish Families Diodontidae and Tetradontidae - English

Puffers belong to two distinct families. The Diodontidae family consists of Porcupinefish and Burrfish, and all have spines, spikes, or burrs on their bodies. The Tetraodontidae family consists of Puffers and Tobies that have no visible spines on their skin. The most common genera of Puffers are Arothron, Diodon, Canthigaster, and Chilomycterus.

Шипы, покрывающие тело, короткие и неподвижные, но у родов двузубы (Diodon) и атопомиктеры (Atopomycterus) они сильно удлинены и подвижны у основания: при спавшихся воздушных мешках прилегают к телу, а при раздувании рыбы встают торчком, придавая ей столь своеобразный облик. Как это ни странно, но шипы рыб-ежей, казалось бы самой природой предназначенные для защиты, не имеют ядовитых желез.
