Distribution: tropical and subtropical parts of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. Jaws with 2 fused teeth. Each side of head with 2 tiny nostrils. Dorsal and anal fins lacking spines, but provides the power for locomotion. Caudal peduncle absent. Caudal fin, when present, a pseudocaudal fin being formed by posteriorly migrated dorsal and anal fin rays. No lateral line.

Наиболее известный представитель семейства - луна-рыба (Mola mola), которая достигает в длину свыше 3 м и массы 1410 кг, а однажды у Атлантического побережья США (Нью-Гэмпшир) был пойман сверхгигант длиной 5,5 м, масса которого осталась неизвестной. Луна-рыба - самая плодовитая рыба: одна самка выметывает до 300 млн. икринок.
