Larval topsmelt (Atherinops affinis) and inland silversides (Menidia beryllina) were exposed in 96-hr static acute toxicity tests to eleven chemicals to
determine the relative sensitivity to the two atherinid species. High to low LC50 ratios for endosulfan, methoxychlor, carbophenothion, chlorpyrifos,
terbufos, fenvalerate, permethrin, 4-nitrophenol, and sodium lauryl sulfate were within a factor of < 2 for the two species. A. affinis was more
sensitive to both azinphos-methyl and 2,4-dinitrophenol by factors of 6.7 and 4.4, respectively. [ eng ] |

Topsmelt - Atherinops affinis
- English
URL: http://elib.cs.berkeley.edu/kopec/tr9/html/sp-topsmelt.html
The range of the topsmelt extends from the Gulf of California to Vancouver Island, British Columbia (Miller and Lea 1972; Hart 1973). Of the three subspecies
described by Schultz (1933) as being found within this range, the San Francisco topsmelt, Atherinops affinis affinis is the only one inhabiting the Sacramento-San
Joaquin estuary. Topsmelt are particularly abundant in the shallow waters of south Bay; young-of-the-year are common in the mesohaline to oligohaline portions of
the estuary. [ eng ] |
