The species experienced a population explosion in Clear Lake and rapidly spread into the adjacent drainages, including Cache Creek and Putah Creek, and from there through the irrigation network to the Delta, where they have become well established. The inland silverside has been one of the most common species collected by beach seine in the Delta, Suisun Bay, and Montezuma Slough during the past four years.

Native Range: Eastern North America including Atlantic and Gulf slopes (mostly near the coast) from Massachusetts to the Rio Grande drainage, Texas, and southeastern New Mexico; north from the Mississippi River and major tributaries (mainly Arkansas and Red rivers) to southern Illinois and eastern Oklahoma. Also in Mexico.
