Cosimo I was the son of Giovanni delle Bande Nere. He was created Duke of Florence in 1537, and Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1569. Under his rule the Botanical Gardens of both Pisa and Florence were founded. He was the author of cosmographical studies and gave to the monk Egnatio Danti the task of producing geographical maps of all (then) known territories. The collection of scientific wonders that was begun by him forms the original nucleus of the Medicean collection, now preserved on the first floor of the Museo.
