Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882) was an Italian patriot and military leader who helped free the Italians from foreign rule and unify the country. He was a master of guerrilla warfare and raised volunteers beginning in 1848 to conduct daring military campaigns to overcome the rule of Austria.

He was born in Nizza on July 4th, 1807. Since he was a boy he proved to be full of courage. When he was eight he saved a woman who had fallen into a ditch and when he was thirteen avoided the shipwreck of some companions. He had a predilection for physical exercises and sea life. When he was fifteen he embarked as ship-boy. In 1832 he became master.

Garibaldi, Giuseppe (1807-1882) The foremost military figure and popular hero of the age of I talian unification known as the Risorgimento with Cavour and Mazzini he is deemed one of the makers of Modern Italy. Cavour is considered the "brain of unification," Mazzini the "sou," and Garibaldi the "sword." For his battles on behalf of freedom in Latin America, Italy, and later France, he has been dubbed the "Hero of Two Worlds."

Campanella Collection, recently presented to the University of South Carolina by Dr. Campanella, is a resource of major significance on Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882), Italian liberator and hero-figure of nineteenth-century liberal nationalism, and on the Risorgimento, the 1860 reunification of Italy.

В освободительную борьбу вступил в 1833 г., участник Итальянской революции 1848—49 гг., организатор обороны Римской республики 1849 г. В 1848 г., 1859 г. и 1866 город во главе добровольцев участвовал в освободительных войнах против Австрии. В 1860 город возглавил поход «Тысячи» за освобождение юга Италии. В 1862 г. и 1867 г. пытался освободить Рим от власти пап. Сражался на стороне Франции во время франко-прусской войны 1870—71 гг.
