Giant Panda - English
URL: http://www.nature.ca/notebooks/english/gpanda.htm

One of the world’s rarest animals, the giant panda lives in the sub-alpine forests in the west central region of China. The classification of the panda has long been a matter of controversy among zoologists. Originally classified with the bears, it was later grouped with raccoons. The weight of evidence that has accumulated over the years, however, now supports the view that it is related to bears. Its closest relative is the spectacled bear of South America.

The Wild Habitat - Giant Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) - English
URL: http://library.thinkquest.org/11234/panda.html?tqskip1=1&tqtime=0313

The giant panda is found in the cold, damp coniferous forest at elevations from 4,000 to 11,000 feet in China. They have a quite small territory of only 1.5 - 2.5 square miles. Giant pandas do not hibernate because they have a year long supply of food and the bamboo they consume is not high enough is fat and calories to support them through an entire winter. The giant panda relies almost completely on bamboo.

Milk Composition and Nursing in a Giant Panda(Ailuropoda melanoleuca) - English
URL: http://www.pku.edu.cn/academic/xb/98/_98e228.html

Milk samples of a wild female giant panda were collected from all the 4 nipples at 77 days postpartum in the Qinling Mountain area. At this lactation stage the giant panda milk averaged(32.0+-2.1)% dry matter, (18.4+-2.1)% fat, (8.34+-0.16)% crude protein, (2.7+-0.12)% sugar, and in two samples (7.6+-0.6) kJ/g gross energy. The fat concentrations were very variable, with particularly high fat(25.9%) in milk from the nipple just suckled;the remaining nipples yielded milk containing 14.5%-19.3% fat.

The Giant Panda: Ailuropoda melanoleuca - English
URL: http://giant-panda.com/pandacool.html

The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) first appeared in the evolutionary record during the late Pliocene or early Pleistocene, some two to three million years ago. Panda fossils have been found in Burma, Vietnam, and particularly in eastern China, as far north as Beijing. Pandas were once widespread in southern and eastern China and in neighbouring Myanmar and north Vietnam. Today, however, there are only around 1,000 left. All of these are found in one geographic region - the bamboo forests of southwestern China.
