Our specimen was obtained from an animal dealer in Texas. These animals live in the south and west of the United States as far as Oregon and live throughout most of Mexico. They are the most solitary and carnivorous of the procyonids, living primarily in dry habitats, preying on lizards and small mammals up to the size of rabbits.

En un estudio en el sector Barva (Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo) se determinу que los cacomistles utilizaron en forma preferencial el bosque secundario y el tacotal. Las hembras usaron preferentemente el tacotal y evitaron el bosque secundario. Los machos prefirieron el bosque secundario y evitaron el bosque maduro y el pastizal arbolado.
