Coatimundis, or coatis, are reddish to gray with white lips and a long tapered but mobile nose. The head and body length is 410-670 mm, tail 320-690 mm and they weigh 3-6 kg. Males are larger than females. The snout is very mobile. The rhinarium is extremely sensitive for exploration of objects and surfaces, as are the raccoon's forepaws. This animal ranges from southwestern United States to Argentina. They live in wooded regions. [ eng ] |

White-nosed Coati (Nasua narica)
- English
URL: http://www.nsrl.ttu.edu/tmot1/nasunari.htm
Coatis spend considerable time on the ground, but they climb trees as easily as a squirrel. When in trees, their long tail seems to function, as does that of a squirrel, largely in maintaining balance. They also occur in some of the rocky canyons that enter the mountains from the lowlands. Except for old males, which are largely solitary in habit, coatis are sociable creatures and travel in packs or troops.
