These rodents can be described only on the basis of their skulls and teeth. In the subgenus Heteropsomys the skull is somewhat smaller than that of an agouti (Dasyprocta), having a total length of about 70 mm. The upper incisors are long but weak. The upper cheek teeth have a single conspicuous internal fold with three separate, transverse, enamel-surrounded lakes. [ eng ] |
