Phocoena sinus: Narrative
- English
URL: http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/accounts/phocoena/p._sinus$narrative.html
An interesting feature of the vaquita is that it is the only species of porpoise that is found in such warm waters. Most phocoenids are restricted to water cooler than 20 degrees Celsius, vaquitas are unique in their ability to tolerate large annual fluctuations in temperature (Hohn, et al, 1996). The Gulf of California may experience temperature ranges from 14 degrees C in January to 36 degrees C in August. This may have an effect on the reproductive seasonality of this species. [ eng ] |

Found in both salt and fresh water areas, Phocoena phocoena require a shallow coastal body of water. In the Western Atlantic, they also move far out to sea near the end of summer and reappear in spring. Other regional populations move south or farther away from shore to avoid ice buildups. Phocoena: Common Porpoises, or Harbor Porpoises
- English
URL: http://www.press.jhu.edu/books/walkers_mammals_of_the_world/cetacea/cetacea.phoc
Common porpoises frequent coastal waters, bays, estuaries, and the mouths of large rivers. They sometimes ascend the rivers. In the western Atlantic, at least, P. phocoena apparently moves well out to sea at the end of summer and reappears in the spring. In other regions P. phocoena also moves away from shore and/or toward the south during the fall and winter in order to avoid the build-up of ice. [ eng ] |

Harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena)
- English
URL: http://phocoena.org/factsheets/harbourporp.html
Harbour porpoises are found in the temperate waters of the northern hemisphere in a nearly circumpolar distribution (see map). They generally inhabit coastal waters with a depth of less than 150 meters, and their common name is derived from their regular appearance in bays and harbours. Many populations of harbour porpoises are migratory.
