Balaena mysticetus (Bowhead Whale)

Cetacea - the world's whales, dolphins and porpoises all on one site. The Bowhead Whale is a species restricted to the colder waters of the Northern Hemisphere, and is rarely far from ice. They migrate northwards, following cracks in the ice in the spring, and then southwards again in the autumn as the sea freezes over.

Balaena mysticetus is a baleen whale, which means that they filter water through baleen plates, feeding on the organisms caught in the plates and pushing the rest of the water out.
