Pelobatidae: Spadefoots - English
URL: http://www.marshall.edu/herp/Old/pelobatidae.htm

The spadefoot toads include nine genera with over 80 species worldwide. Examples of spadefoots may be found in Europe, Asia, northern Africa, and North America (including Mexico). The name "spadefoot" comes from the dark, cornified spur along the base of the inner toe. Spadefoots usually live in sandy soil and use this spur for digging themselves into a burrow. Only one genus occurs in the United States.

Pelobatidae family - English
URL: http://www.fs.fed.us/r4/amphibians/family_pelobatidae.htm

The spadefoot toads inhabit arid regions of North America. They are named after the horny, dark, sharp-edged "spade" like tubercle found on each hind foot. The spade is used to excavate daytime burrows. They also have short snouts, vertical pupils, relatively smooth skin, teeth in upper jaw and no parotoid glands; characteristics which help distinguish them from the true toads (Family Bufonidae). Another difference is amplexus; it is pelvic spadefoot toads and pectoral in true toads.
