Rhineura is a member of Amphisbaenia, a lineage of mostly limbless burrowing lizards known from the Paleocene onward. Amphisbaenians share a highly modified skull architecture, a unique modification of the ear called the extracolumella, and skin with annuli (rings, like a worm).
