Since publication of Atlas of Amphibians in Tennessee (Redmond, W. H. and A. F. Scott. 1996. Notophthalmus viridescens Atlas page - English

Central Newt distribution in Wisconsin is problematic. Widely distributed throughout the state, newts probably occur in many more counties than are currently documented. The gap in distribution in west-central Wisconsin mapped by Conant & Collins (1991) is considered an artifact of collecting bias, as recent records are available from Eau Claire, Trempealeau and Buffalo counties.

Notophthalmus viridescens (Eastern Newt, Red-Spotted Newt, Etc.): Narrative - English
URL: http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/accounts/notophthalmus/n._viridescens$narr

Notophthalmus viridescens inhabits both deciduous and coniferous forests. Immature larvae and the adult newts reside in unpolluted ponds, small lakes, ditches, and marshes with preferably mud bottoms. Adults can survive on land if their aquatic habitat becomes unsuitable; adults may move onto land during dry periods when the water is low or to rid themselves of ectoparasites.
