Taricha granulosa - English
URL: http://imnh.isu.edu/digitalatlas/bio/amph/urodela/tagr/tagrfram.htm

Rough-Skinned Newts are generally found in forested areas, but can also occur in grassy valleys and even agricultural areas. These salamanders are somewhat unique in that they can sometimes be found on the surface in broad daylight. They secrete a very toxic substance from their skin, and it is suggested that this is what affords their non-secretive habits.

Natural History: This is one of the best studied salamanders in the world. Their dispersal and homing abilities have been subject to several projects, from which we have learned that the newts use a combination of scent and star positions to navigate.

URL: http://www.wildherps.com/species/T.granulosa.html

Rough-skinned Newts are closely related to California Newts, and indeed were once considered the same species. They're brightly colored underneath, but you'd never guess it from above.

Rough-skinned Newts are large salamanders reaching total lengths up to 8 inches. They are characterized by warty skin that is not slimy, and are light brown to balck above with ayellow to orange belly. They bear a close resemblance to California Newt, but the teeth in the upper jaw form a V shape as opposed to a Y in the very California Newt, but this is easy to look at only on dead specimens.

The newts (family Salamandridae) of the genus Taricha are known as Pacific newts. As their common name implies, these newts have rough glandular skin and are distinguished from other salamanders by their lack of costal grooves and distinct tooth pattern. The most poisonous newt in North America, the skin secretions and body of this newt can cause death in most vertebrates, including humans if eaten in a high enough quantity.

These bumpy little fellows are poor photography models, because they don't like to sit still when exposed. They don't move fast, but they generally start plodding away exactly one instant before you snap the shutter.
