Eastern Narrowmouth Toad Page - English
URL: http://bioweb.wku.edu/froglogger/enarro%7E1.htm

The Eastern Narrowmouth Toad, Gastrophryne carolinensis, is found from the southern portion of the Cumberland Plateau west to the Jackson Purchase. It appears to be absent from the Bluegrass region, the western coalfields, and portions of eastern Kentucky. Unlike other toads of Kentucky, the Eastern Narrowmouth is small plump-bodied toad with smooth skin. Their tiny, pointed, turtle-necked heads with beady-eyes give them a very distinctive look.

Voice: Call is a high drawn-out, insect-like "beeeeeeeeeeee". Many liken it to the bleating of a newborn lamb. We have heard them call from April through October. Breeding choruses usually follow heavy rains, especially late summer rains of 2" or more.

Gastrophryne carolinensis (Eastern Narrowmouth Toad): Narrative - English
URL: http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/accounts/gastrophryne/g._carolinensis$narr

Gastrophryne carolinensis has a wide variety of habitats with only two requirements. These are shelter and moisture. Narrowmouth toads are very good burrowers, and therefore may be abundant in an area without leaving any visable signs. These toads can be found by over turning boards, logs, or other shelters. Also, they can be found in vegetable debris or sawdust piles.
