Historically, the western spadefoot ranged from Redding to northwestern Baja California. In California, the species was found throughout the Central Valley, and in the Coast Ranges and coastal lowlands from San Francisco Bay to Mexico. It has been extirpated from many locations within this range.

The vernacular name of this family, spadefoot toads, indicates one of the more distinctive features of the members of this family. They possess a horny tubercle on the rear edge of each hind foot that is used when these animals bury themselves rear first.
