The John Muir Trust was formed in 1983 to protect and conserve wild places and to increase awareness and understanding of the value of such places. The Trust works closely with local communities. Today, the Trust owns and manages seven superb areas totalling 20,000 hectares (50,000 acres) in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

WWF-UK: Working in Scotland - English

In over a hundred countries, WWF works with other conservation organisations, governments, and local communities, to protect the natural environment and to build a future in which people live in harmony with nature. One of those countries is Scotland. A team of 17 people, based in Aberfeldy, Perthshire, applies the same principles to the Cairngorms and the otter as other WWF teams apply to the rainforest and the rhino. Scotland's mountains and rivers advertise our country on calendars and shortbread tins around the world - yet a closer look shows that their beauty is only skin-deep.
