Gregory the Great, Moralia in Iob - English URL: http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/jod/gregory.html
Gregory the Great was pope from 590-604 and left behind a substantial literary heritage. His most ambitious work and one of the most popular works of scriptural exegesis in the middle ages was the Moralia in Iob, commenting the book of Job in 35 books running to over half a million words. The flavor of the work may be found from the highly "confessional" last page of the text, available here in Latin and in English.
ST. GREGORY I, THE GREAT - English URL: http://www.cfpeople.org/Books/Pope/POPEp64.htm
Gregory the Great was born in Rome at some time around 540. His father, Gordianus, was a wealthy patrician with a fine town house on the Coelian Hill and large estates in Sicily. More important than noble blood and great wealth, this family had a strong Christian spirit. Gregory's mother, Sylvia, was honored as a saint as were his father's two sisters, and John the Deacon can speak of Gregory's education as that of a saint among saints.

St. Gregory Dialogos (or the Great) was the first monk to become pope. He was born c 540 CE into a Christian family; on his mother's side, he was related to Boethius. Gregory's grandfather was Pope Felix III, and he is supposed to have been related to Pope Agapetus I as well. In 572, Gregory was made the prefect of the city of Rome, a position he resigned in 574. He used his patrimony to establish the monastery of St. Andrew on the Caelin Hill in Rome and six monasteries in Sicily. In 578, he was ordained a deacon, and in 579, he became the papal nuncio at Constantinople, a post he kept until 585. In 590, he was elected pope. He did not want the job but kept it until his death in 604.

CIN - St. Gregory the Great by St. Bede the Venerable - English URL: http://www.cin.org/greggrea.html
Tradition has assigned the name Great to only two Popes, St. Leo I (440-461) and St. Gregory I (590-604). The latter is perhaps best remembered for his efforts to promote the conversion of the English. The following account is from St. Bede's classic work (written before 731) on early English Church history.

Pope St. Gregory the Great - English URL: http://www.christdesert.org/noframes/scholar/benedict/st.gregory.html
Only thirty-three years after the death of St. Benedict, and almost exactly one century after the date of his birth, the Monastery of Monte Cassino was razed by the invading Lombards. According to tradition the resident monks fled to Rome and found refuge near the Lateran Basilica. Very possibly it was there that the future pope was first introduced to the Rule of St. Benedict.
