St. Paul - English

This great apostle was a Jew, of the tribe of Benjamin. At his circumcision, on the eighth day after his birth, he received the name of Saul. His father was by sect a Pharisee, and a denizen of Tarsus, the capital of Cilicia: which city had shown a particular regard for the cause of the Caesars; on which account Cassius deprived it of its privileges and lands; but Augustus when conqueror, made it ample amends by honoring it with many new privileges, and with the freedom of Rome, as we read in the two Dions and Appian.

St. Peter, originally known as Simon, was the son of a man named John, and his brother's name was Andrew. We also know that he was married, since Jesus cured his mother-in-law at the family home at Bethsaida in Gallilee (Mark 11:30). A fisherman by trade, Jesus was to call Peter, along with his brother and James and John, to leave everything behind to become His followers and to catch people's souls in their nets (Matthew 4:19).

Biography: Peter and Paul, Apostles and Martyrs (29 Jun 64) - English
URL: http://elvis.rowan.edu/~kilroy/JEK/06/29.html

shown in filters: Personalia

The Confession of Peter ("Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God") is commemorated on 18 January, and the Conversion of Paul (on the approach to Damascus) a week later on 25 January. On 29 June we commemorate the martyrdoms of both apostles. The date is the anniversary of a day around 258, under the Valerian persecution, when what were believed to be the remains of the two apostles were both moved temporarily to prevent them from falling into the hands of the persecutors.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: St. Paul - English

Professor Schmidt has published a photographic copy, a transcription, a German translation, and a commentary of a Coptic papyrus composed of about 2000 fragments, which he has classified, juxtaposed, and deciphered at a cost of infinite labour ("Acta Pauli aus der Heidelberger koptischen Papyrushandschrift Nr. 1", Leipzig, 1904, and "Zusatze" etc., Leipzig, 1905). Most critics, whether Catholic (Duchesne, Bardenhewer, Ehrhard etc.), or Protestant (Zahn, Harnack, Corssen etc.), believe that these are real "Acta Pauli", although the text edited by Schmidt, with its very numerous gaps, represents but a small portion of the original work.
