Although Danish by birth, Vitus Jonassen Bering (1681-1741) spent most of his adult life in the Russian navy. In 1725, shortly before his death, Peter the Great instructed Bering to prove definitely that Siberia was separated from North America and to find the nearest European settlement in the New World. During the First Kamchatka Expedition (1725-30), Bering and his assistant lieutenant, Aleksei Chirikov (1703-48), sailed north along the coast of Kamchatka, and in August 1728 passed between the two continents.

Danish explorer in Russian employ. In 1725 he was selected by Peter I to explore far NE Siberia. Having finally moved men and supplies across Siberia, Bering in 1728 sailed N through Bering Strait but sighted no land and did not recognize the importance of the strait. Later in 1728, setting out from Kamchatka, he was driven from his course and discovered the southern route around Kamchatka.

Беринг, Витус, или Иван Иванович, как его звали в России, - капитан-командор, первый русский мореплаватель, именем которого названы пролив, отделяющий Азию от Америки, и Камчатское или Бобровое море.

По происхождению датчанин. В 1725-30 и 1732-41 руководитель 1-й и 2-й Камчатскими экспедициями. Прошел между Чукотским п-овом и Аляской (Берингов пролив ), достиг Сев. Америки и открыл ряд островов Алеутской гряды. Умер во время зимовки на острове, ныне носящем его имя. Именем Беринга названо также море и пролив на севере Тихого ок.
