The Prussian ambassador in London suggested to Richardson the name of a young German, Heinrich Barth, who already had experience of exploration in the Middle East and in northern Africa. Barth had studied archeology, history, geography and law at the University of Berlin.

Die nachfolgenden Ereignisse schildern eine Episode aus dem Jahre 1853, als der große deutsche Afrikaforscher Heinrich Barth bei Ssai den Niger erreichte. Er durchquerte von dort aus den Nigerbogen, zog durch die wilden Homboriberge und betrat am 7. November als dritter Europäer (nach Major Laing und René Caillié) das legendäre Timbuktu. Sein Rückweg führte ihn über Gao, immer am Ufer des Flusses entlang, bis er schließlich nach fast elf Monaten Reise wieder Ssai erreichte.
