Christopher Kit Carson was a fur trapper, mountain man, and guide to explorer John C. Fremont on 3 expeditions. Heroism in California during the Mexican War brought him national recognition. He was colonel of the 1st New Mexico Infantry and was brevetted Brigadier General, U.S. Volunteers for his war service which consisted primarily of Indian fighting. His autobiography, Kit Carson's Own Story of His Life, was first published in 1926.

Kit Carson was a fur trapper, mountain man, and guide to explorer John C. Fremont, who gained national fame for his service in California during the Mexican War. He also gained notoriety as an Indian fighter. During the Civil War, he commanded the First New Mexico Volunteer Infantry Regiment and was brevetted brigadier general of volunteers.

Soldier, born in Madison County, Kentucky, 24 December, 1809; died at Fort Lynn, Col., 23 May, 1868. While he was an infant his parents emigrated to what is now Howard County, Missouri, but was then a wilderness. At the age of fifteen he was apprenticed to a saddler, with whom he continued two years, and then he joined a hunting expedition, thus beginning the adventurous life that made him one of the most picturesque figures of western history.

Authentic Legend of the Desert Southwest. Kit spent most of his boyhood in the Boone's Lick district of Missouri (then part of the Louisiana Territory), which later became Howard County. His father was killed by a falling tree limb when Kit was only 9 years old, and the need to work prevented him from receiving an education. He was apprenticed to a saddle- and harness-maker when he turned 14, but grew restless after a year and left home in 1826 with a wagon train heading west to Santa Fe.
