Claribel Alegría nació en Estelí, Nicaragua, en 1924. Desde muy niña vivió en El Salvador. Ha publicado una veintena de libros de poesía y narrativa así como testimonios históricos en colaboración con su marido, Darwin J. Flakoll. Entre estos últimos destacan Fuga de Canto Grande (1992) y Somoza: Expediente cerrado (1993).
